6 QUESTIONS TO KELLY LO – INTERIOR DESIGNER
1_We read that you come from a family of artists, being art and performing arts one of your major passions. How much did it affect your education as a designer?
My maternal family is all in performing arts and performing arts education. My father was a fashion buyer and so, I was given a beautiful upbringing. Painting, piano, violin, ballet, character, tap dancing…etc. were part of my everyday activities as a kid. Being submerged in the arts taught me not only how to appreciate, but also how to bring out the romance and beauty in all things. Growing up in the world of the Yip’s Children’s Choral & Performing Arts Center (my maternal family), I was given opportunities to travel the world, represent Hong Kong as a cultural ambassador; all while performing in some of the most beautiful, impressive venues on Earth. By the age of 18, I had travelled to more places in the world, across continents than most people do in a lifetime. Studying interior design just seemed to be a natural next step that combined all those aspects of visual artistry and performing arts together!The look and aesthetics of the interiors are important, but equally important are how people inhabit and flow through the space which in a way is a bit like dancing, no?
2_Among your passions piano playing, tap dance and theatre, artistic disciplines in which you have reached an outstanding level. How much does this part of your personal life influence your professional life?
The performing arts is something that teaches and drills confidence into you as a performer, as a person. There is no room for shyness or backing out once you’re committed on that stage.I think confidence in your work as a designer is very important because design is so subjective. You have to trust in yourself and the vision you’ve created for your client.I’ve also come to realize that my gut intuition is always what I end up going back to and deciding on.
3_Is your artistic flair what drives customers to require your services?
I think so, I hope so! I think my design aesthetic is very different from most Hong Kong designers out there as I tend to use a lot of bold color. Most interiors in Hong Kong (especially before the Instagram influence) were quite plain, nude and in my perspective, quite dull and monotonous. That’s actually changing now because spaces now want to be Instagrammable and therefor, the trend is shifting to more colors and textures though, mainly in the commercial sector.I’ve always loved using color in residential spaces as it makes for a livelier, happier atmosphere but color in residences usually scares clients. I’m lucky my clients trust my aesthetic.
4_You recently completed The Central Office Club House in one of the tallest skyscrapers in Hong Kong. In this project some rooms exhibit works of art and collectibles. Was this the trigger inspiration for your design?
We went into the project knowing that there would be a few pieces of artwork, the main feature piece being a pair of bronze lacquered Cherries from Surinam artist Lothar Vigelandzoon. It wasn’t the main trigger inspiration as the main usage of the clubhouse was ultimately to be for meetings and entertaining. The artpiece in this case does only serve as decoration but it did drive the color scheme of the whole space. I wanted the piece to really stand out and so we used a lot of teal and turquoise blues; colors and tones that complement yet contrast with the cherry red lacquer. We also mimicked the materiality of the artpiece and repeat the bronze element in small details throughout the space like in the bookshelf frames and chair details.
5_You worked in close collaboration with Essess Designer Fabbrica. How did they cope with your requests?
Essess Designer Fabbrica was a great help in this process. I mean, we’ve worked together for years and they understand my aesthetic and my design process which saves so much time. As always, they’re able to deliver and are very helpful and professional in the installation process.
6_Would you agree on Essess Designer Fabbrica being able to offer to each project specific and original solutions fit for the world of international design?
Yes, Essess Designer Fabbrica proposes some great solutions and alternatives to what I have in mind. I like finding unique pieces and they’re able to assist me in finding them!

1_ Abbiamo letto che vieni da una famiglia di artisti e che arte e arti dello spettacolo sono le tue grandi passioni. Quanto ha influito tutto questo sulla tua formazione come designer?
La mia famiglia materna è nello spettacolo e nell’educazione artistica. Mio padre era un buyer nel campo della moda e quindi sono cresciuta in un mondo bellissimo. Pittura, pianoforte, violino, balletto, recitazione, tip tap, e non solo, facevano parte delle mie attività quotidiane da bambina. Essere circondata dall’arte mi ha insegnato non solo ad apprezzare, ma anche a mostrare il romanticismo e la bellezza che si celano in ogni cosa. Crescendo nel mondo dello Yip’s Children’s Choral & Performing Arts Center (della mia famiglia materna), mi è stata data l’opportunità di viaggiare per il mondo, rappresentando Hong Kong come ambasciatrice culturale. Tutto questo mentre loro si esibivano in alcuni dei luoghi più belli e impressionanti della Terra. All’età di 18 anni, avevo già viaggiato nei vari continenti, visitando più luoghi al mondo di quanto la maggior parte delle persone faccia in una vita intera. Studiare interior design mi è parso un passo naturale che ha riunito tutti quegli aspetti dell’arte visiva e delle arti dello spettacolo! L’immagine e l’estetica d’interni sono importanti, ma altrettanto importante è come la gente ci si muove all’interno, un po’ come in una danza, non credete?
2_Tra le tue passioni il pianoforte, il tip tap e il teatro, discipline artistiche in cui hai raggiunto un livello eccezionale. Quanto questo aspetto della tua vita personale ha influito su quella professionale?
Le arti dello spettacolo ti insegnano ad analizzare la fiducia in te stesso come performer, come persona. Non c’è spazio per la timidezza né possibilità di tirarsi indietro una volta che si è saliti sul palco. Penso che la fiducia nel proprio lavoro di designer sia molto importante perché il design è soggettivo. Devi fidarti di te stesso e della visione che hai creato per il cliente. Ho anche capito che finisco sempre per tornare a fidarmi del mio intuito quado prendo una decisione.
3_ E’ il tuo talento artistico ciò che spinge i clienti a rivolgersi a te?
Credo di sì, lo spero proprio! Penso che la mia estetica del design sia molto diversa da quella della maggior parte dei designer di Hong Kong, dato che tendo a usare tonalità cromatiche molto forti. La maggior parte degli interni di Hong Kong (specialmente prima dell’influenza di Instagram) erano abbastanza semplici, nudi e, secondo me, piuttosto noiosi e monotoni. Questo in realtà sta cambiando perché gli spazi ora vogliono essere instagrammabili e quindi la tendenza si sta spostando su un maggior uso del colore e una diversificazione delle texture, specie nel settore commerciale. Ho sempre adorato usare il colore negli spazi residenziali in quanto crea un’atmosfera più vivace e più felice, ma il colore nelle abitazioni di solito spaventa i clienti. Sono fortunata ad avere clienti che si fidano della mia estetica.
4_Recentemente hai portato a termine la realizzazione della Central Office Club House in uno dei grattacieli più alti di Hong Kong. In questo progetto alcune sale espongono opere d’arte e oggetti da collezione. E’ stato questo aspetto a far scaturire l’ispirazione del tuo lavoro?
Abbiamo dato il via al progetto sapendo che ci sarebbero state alcune opere d’arte. Il pezzo principale era una coppia di ciliegie in bronzo smaltato, opera di Lothar Vigelandzoon, un artista di Suriname. Non è stata però l’unica fonte d’ispirazione, in quanto l’uso principale della clubhouse doveva essere quello di permettere di tenere riunioni ed eventi di intrattenimento. L’opera d’arte in questo caso serve solo come decorazione ma ha guidato la combinazione di colori dell’intero spazio. Volevo che il pezzo spiccasse in modo particolare e quindi abbiamo usato molto il verde acqua e il turchese; tonalità cromatiche che si completano in forte contrasto con la lacca rosso ciliegia. Abbiamo anche imitato la materialità dell’opera d’arte e ripetuto l’elemento in bronzo in piccoli dettagli in tutto lo spazio, ad esempio nelle cornici degli scaffali e nei dettagli delle sedie.
5_Per questo progetto hai lavorato in stretta collaborazione con Essess Designer Fabbrica. Come hanno risposto alle tue richieste?
Essess Designer Fabbrica è stata di grande aiuto in questo processo. Lavoriamo insieme da anni e capiscono perfettamente la mia estetica e il mio approccio alla progettazione, un elemento che consente di risparmiare molto tempo. Rispettano sempre le tempistiche e le modalità di consegna e sono un valido partner anche durante tutte le fasi del processo di installazione.
6_Quindi ritieni che Essess Designer Fabbrica sia in grado di offrire a ogni progetto soluzioni specifiche e originali adatte al mondo del design internazionale?
Sì, Essess Designer Fabbrica mi ha sempre proposto ottime soluzioni e possibili alternative a ciò che avevo in mente. Mi piace trovare pezzi unici e loro sono stati in grado di aiutarmi a scovarli!
