The Caritas Institute of Higher Education (CIHE) aims to nurture graduates who are both academically well-educated professionals, and social and moral caretakers for the well-being of society. The CIHE, located in Tiu Keng Leng, Hong Kong, next to the Caritas Bianchi College of Careers (CBCC), aspires to become the Saint Francis University in the future, a well-respected and internationally recognized institution.
The 9-storey campus is built with state-of-art facilities, including multi-media classrooms, e-learning laboratories, exhibition halls, and a Chapel.
ESSESS Ltd, in collaboration with Progetto Arte Poli and the Caritas Hong Kong, developed the full art concept for the entire educational institute. Its full effect is best witnessed in the Chapel and the main lobby.
Progetto Arte Poli was founded as an artistic glass workshop by Maestro Albano Poli in 1953. Nowadays, the workshop is based in Verona, Italy, and is 64,500 ft2 wide with a staff of 60 skilled designers, artists, architects and technicians who create unique stained-glass pieces, mosaics, frescoes, sculptures, wrought iron works and other artistic creations.
Arte Poli’s projects are conceived as true artworks: each fresco, each mosaic, each sculpture is unique and created to last in time as an exemplar expression of Italian craftsmanship.
The project for the CIHE, completed in 2017, was designed as a single, comprehensive artwork centered around a common theme: the Divine Light. Inspired by Pope Francis, Maestro Albano and the Bishop of Hong Kong at the time, the Most Reverend Michael Yeung focused the artistic creations around the figures of three saints: Francis of Assisi, Francis of Sales, and Francis of Xavier. Their actions are testimony of their lives dedicated to the promotion of loving and expressing love through Nature, Teaching, and Communication.
The students and visitors are greeted by a stained-glass window portraying an abstract road that guides them towards the light of God. Yet, these shades of light are empowering, allowing them to find their own ‘road.’
The Carrara marble inlay mosaic for the outer walls of the Conference Halls resembles crumpled newspaper pages, an explosion of forms and colors that personify the power of communication and expression.
The intimacy of the Chapel is juxtaposed to the heavenly look of the ceiling fresco that creates a sense of belonging and brightness. The bronze ‘Cristo della Speranza’ looks upon the visitors warmly, embracing them in his arms. Placed all around the Chapel are backlit windows of sandblasted glass of an intense blue color that represent ‘The Works of Mercy, Corporal and Spiritual’.
In a world dominated by consumerism, this project sheds light on mankind’s more hidden desire to express the borderless nature of Art in time and space.

La CIHE, con sede a Tiu Keng Leng, Hong Kong, di fianco al Caritas Bianchi College of Careers (CBCC), aspira a diventare in futuro la Saint Francis University, un’istituzione prestigiosa e riconosciuta a livello internazionale.
Il campus di nove piani è costruito con strutture all’avanguardia, tra cui aule multimediali, laboratori di e-learning, sale espositive e una Cappella.
ESSESS Ltd, in collaborazione con Progetto Arte Poli e la Caritas Hong Kong, ha sviluppato l’intero concept artistico per il centro studi. La massima espressione di questo lavoro è meglio testimoniata nella Cappella e nell’entrata della Hall principale.
Progetto Arte Poli nasce come vetreria artistica grazie al suo fondatore Maestro Albano Poli nel 1953. Oggi questa bottega con sede a Verona, Italia, è un grande laboratorio di 6.000 mq con uno staff di sessanta professionisti tra progettisti, artisti, architetti e tecnici che creano vetrate artistiche, mosaici, affreschi, sculture, opere in ferro battuto e altre creazioni artistiche originali.
Ogni progetto di Arte Poli è concepito come una vera e propria opera d’arte: ogni affresco, ogni mosaico, ogni scultura è unica e creata per durare nel tempo come espressione esemplare dell’artigianato italiano.
Il progetto per la CIHE, terminato nel 2017, è stato concepito come un’unica opera d’arte incentrata su un tema: la Luce Divina. Ispirati da Papa Francesco, Maestro Albano e l’allora Vescovo di Hong Kong, il Reverendo Michael Yeung, hanno basato le creazioni artistiche attorno alle figure di tre santi: Francesco d’Assisi, Francesco di Sales e Francesco di Saverio. Le azioni di questi tre giganti della fede sono testimonianza delle loro vite dedicate a promuovere l’amore attraverso la Natura, l’Insegnamento e la Comunicazione.
Gli studenti, i fedeli e i visitatori sono accolti da una vetrata raffigurante una strada astratta che pare guidarli verso la Luce Divina. Allo stesso tempo, queste sfumature di luce diventano un’opportunità per ogni individuo di cercare una propria via.
Il mosaico in marmo di Carrara posizionato sulle pareti esterne della sala conferenza ricorda le pagine di giornale accartocciate, ad un’esplosione di forme e colori che onorano il potere della comunicazione e dell’espressione.
L’atmosfera che si respira all’interno della Cappella è sia di intimità, sia di appartenenza. È, infatti, l’affresco al soffitto che, grazie alla sua luminosità e bagliore, ricorda la Luce Divina e il Paradiso. Il crocifisso in bronzo del “Cristo della Speranza” accoglie i visitatori quasi abbracciandoli. Intorno alla Cappella sono collocate finestre retroilluminate di vetro sabbiato di un intenso colore blu che rappresentano “Le opere di Misericordia, Corporali e Spirituali”.
In un mondo dominato dal consumismo, questo progetto fa luce sul desiderio più nascosto dell’uomo di esprimere la natura senza confini spazio-temporali dell’Arte.
