Korean architect Young Ju Lee has installed a giant, circle-shaped piece of furniture within Seoul’s Hangang park. Measuring 30 meters in diameter (almost 100 feet), “Root Bench” appears to organically spread across the terrain like the roots of an enormous tree. The object allows visitors to the park to lean, sit, or lie on its sprawling ‘branches’, which are elevated above the ground at different heights.
Young Ju Lee designed the project, which was submitted as part of the Hangang art competition, using a computer algorithm that generated the bench’s three-dimensional geometry. Topped with a wooden deck, the structure itself is supported by a metal frame with concrete footings.
The bench comprises three different types of furniture, set at three different heights: a child’s chair (250mm), an adult’s chair (450mm), and a table (75mm). This configuration means that visitors of all shapes and sizes can occupy the bench in whatever way they want, whether they are in large groups or more intimate company. Combined with the use of wood, the rhythmic form of the bench allows it to blend into its setting, blurring the boundary between artificial installation and natural environment.

La “Root Bench” sembra un’immensa radice di un albero che consente ai visitatori del parco di appoggiarsi, sdraiarsi sopra, sedersi sulle sue “ramificazioni” che in alcuni punti si sollevano a diverse altezze rispetto al terreno.
Young Ju Lee ha disegnato il progetto, presentato in occasione di un concorso artistico legato alll’Hangang Park, utilizzando un algoritmo che ha generato la geometria tridimensionale della struttura. Ricoperta da pannelli di legno, la struttura è composta da uno scheletro di metallo che poggia su sostegni di cemento.
Ci sono tre tipologie di utilizzo situate a tre diverse altezze: una seduta da bambino (di 250 mm), una seduta da adulto (di 450 mm) e un tavolo (di 750 mm). Questa predisposizione fa sì che i visitatori possano utilizzare la struttura a loro piacimento, sia che si tratti di singole persone che di gruppi più numerosi. La forma sinuosa e ritmica, unita all’utilizzo del legno, si integra nell’ambente che supera il confine tra installazione e ambiente naturale.
