Transformed in 2012 by David Chipperfield Architects into a luxury hotel, the historic Hotel Café Royal, located in the heart of London between Mayfair and Soho, is today redeveloped thanks to the project of Lissoni Casal Ribeiro.
Keeping intact the historic structure dated 1865, the lobby becomes a wide-ranging place taking advantage of the double height of the structure. From the ceiling a precious Murano glass chandelier, made to measure, falls impressively on the table in polished brass, which instead arises from the floor. Polished brass also defines the two large parallelepipeds that form the reception counters creating a material bond with the pre-existing decorative elements such as the capitals of the columns. Behind the reception desk, the back-lit cannetted glass further enhances the environment.
On the sides of the reception are the two lounge areas characterized by dark and warm tones and, in the adjacent room, the concierge with a most intimate flavor, comfortable furnishings and a library.
On the upper floor there is the Restaurant Laurent at Café Royal which is accessed to through the sushi bar, characterized by a lit wall for the storage of bottles beyond which you can see the kitchen with grill. The restaurant is an informal yet sophisticated setting with a show kitchen, Vienna straw armchairs and custom-made benches. On the other side of the sushi bar you enter the other room whose wooden panelling recalls the atmosphere of London clubs, while the mirrored ceiling is a surprise effect that multiplies the space. On one side, the bar counter embellished by the backlit Onyx wall is in line with the entire project that balances the history of the place with contemporary design and classic style.
In all environments, a precise work on lighting has also been carried out to make it “sexy and sensual, a poetic contrast against darkness”.

Trasformato nel 2012 da David Chipperfield Architects in un albergo di lusso, lo storico Hotel Café Royal, situato nel cuore di Londra tra Mayfair e Soho, è oggi riqualificato grazie al progetto di Lissoni Casal Ribeiro.
Mantenendo intatta la struttura storica datata 1865, la lobby diventa un luogo di ampio respiro sfruttando la doppia altezza della struttura. Dal soffitto un prezioso chandelier in vetro di Murano, realizzato su misura, scende imponente sul tavolo in ottone lucido, che invece nasce dal pavimento. L’ottone lucido definisce anche i due grandi parallelepipedi che formano i banconi della reception creando un legame materico con gli elementi decorativi pre-esistenti come i capitelli delle colonne. Dietro la reception il vetro cannettato retro-illuminato esalta ulteriormente l’ambiente.
Ai lati della reception si trovano le due zone lounge caratterizzate da toni scuri e caldi e, nella stanza adiacente, il concierge dal sapore più intimo, con arredi confortevoli e una biblioteca.
Al piano superiore si trova il Ristorante Laurent at Café Royal a cui si accede tramite il sushi-bar, caratterizzato da una parete illuminata per la conservazione delle bottiglie oltre la quale si intravede la cucina con grill. Il ristorante è un ambiente informale ma sofisticato con una show kitchen, poltroncine in paglia di Vienna e panche custom-made. Dall’altro lato del sushi bar si entra nell’altra sala le cui boiserie in legno richiamano le atmosfere dei club londinesi, mentre il soffitto a specchio è un effetto a sorpresa che ne moltiplica lo spazio. Su un lato, il bancone bar impreziosito dalla parete in onice retro illuminata è in linea con l’intero progetto che bilancia la storia del luogo con design contemporaneo e stile classico.
In tutti gli ambienti è inoltre stato realizzato un preciso lavoro sull’illuminazione per renderla “sexy e sensuale, un poetico contrasto contro l’oscurità”.
