Located in the heart of Muttrah, the largest port in Oman, the new fish market, designed by Snøhetta, is a tribute to the Country past and future.
Built near the original fish market of the city, dating back to 1960, the new fish market covers over 4,000 square metres. The architectural concept is inspired by the playful qualities of light and shadow filtered through the form of a double radial wall radial which is the backbone of the new space, where the curved wall represents the radial shape of the promenade and of the huge bay.
The shape of the cover takes inspiration from the meandering flow of Arabic calligraphy, following the logic of a plyaful movement of lights and shadows formed by aluminum fins that provide shade and a natural ventilation. The complexity of the vaulted roof contrasts with the simple solidity of the underlying concrete structure.
Inside the visitor is greeted by a lively place, animated by the new fruit and vegetable market alongside with the fish market. The complex also offers spaces for refrigeration, packaging and storage in addition to offices, cafés and a restaurant on the roof terrace.
MUTTRAH FISH MARKET OMAN
Situato nel cuore di Muttrah, il più grande porto dell’Oman, il nuovo mercato del pesce progettato da Snøhetta è un tributo al passato e al futuro del paese.
Costruito vicino all’originario mercato del pesce della città, risalente al 1960, il nuovo mercato ittico si estende su 4.000 metri quadrati. Il concetto architettonico è ispirato alle qualità ludiche della luce e dell’ombra filtrate attraverso la forma di un doppio muro radiale che definisce la spina dorsale del nuovo spazio. Dove la parete curva rappresenta la forma radiale del lungomare e dell’ampia baia.
La forma della copertura trae ispirazione dal flusso sinuoso della calligrafia araba, seguendo la logica di un movimento giocoso di luci e ombre costituito da alette in alluminio che forniscono ombra e ventilazione naturale. La complessità del tetto a volta contrasta con la semplice solidità della struttura sottostante in cemento.
All’interno il visitatore è accolto da un luogo vivace, animato anche dal nuovo mercato di frutta e verdura che affianca quelle del pesce. La struttura offre anche spazi di refrigerazione, imballaggio e stoccaggio oltre a uffici, caffetterie e un ristorante sul tetto.
