THE NEW SWATCH & OMEGA CAMPUS

With its 46.778 mq, the new Swatch & Omega Campus, in Biel, Switzerland, is probably the most spectacular project by Shigeru Ban Architects,  one of the largest hybrid mass wood projects in the world.

Through his disaster relief work, Shigeru Ban experienced firsthand the direct impact of climate change and natural disasters that have caused negative effects on both people and the planet. Climate change is a reality that must be addressed both in our way of life and in the way of building. However, construction today does not consider the future and well-being of our planet responsibly. To this end, Shigeru Ban Architects promotes wood construction as a model of environmental awareness. Although wood is one of the oldest building materials, it is also one of those that promises a lot for the future.

The Swatch and Omega Campus is a monumental wooden construction project, consisting of three buildings hosting the headquarters and the multi-storey offices of Swatch; the Omega factory, the Omega watch manufacturing center and the Cité du Temps, the Swatch and Omega conference room and museum. The buildings share a design language, a material palette and an environmental ethic that reflects the unified brands of Swatch and Omega, while expressing the individuality of each building through contrasting structural forms.
